We are blessed and privileged to have the Christchurch School of Music (CSM) Band Outreach Programme available here at Hillview.  The programme includes tuition in range of band instruments as well as a one hour session weekly playing in a band with a conductor. 

​

Enrollments for the band programme are taken and confirmed in the previous school year. In term four, look out for information in the newsletter about the band programme parent information evening. Prospective students are able to try out different instruments at this evening and may sign up for the programme.

​

We have hosted the band programme at Hillview for a number of years now.  Students have the opportunity to emerge as excellent, confident musicians, especially if they follow the programme through. Students develop practical and notation skills, their ability to follow a conductor, and experience the joy of making music with others. I

The Bands​

The Band Programme comprises four bands: a Training Band, a Concert Band, a Youth Band and a Jazz Band.  Usually students will spend their first year in the Training Band, the second in the Concert Band and from the third year join the Youth Band and/or Jazz Band.  Band Programme tutors place students in the band that is most suitable for them.

 

Training Band (beginners)

The Training Band is for students new to their instruments.  Students work through the first half of their tutor book 1, while learning to read music and playing their instrument in the training band.

 

Concert Band  

After a year in the Training Band most students will move to the Concert Band to complete tutor book 1.  They will develop their musical skills and be exposed to more challenging band repertoire.

 

Youth Band  

When students have completed tutor book 1, they can be invited to join the CSM Youth Band whose repertoire is more upbeat and demanding at Grade 3-5 ABRSM level.  This band plays regularly at community events.

Jazz Band – Extension Ensemble  

This smaller extension group is by audition for students who have reached approximately Grade 4-6 ABRSM standard.  A variety of jazz styles & repertoire is played while jazz articulation and basic jazz improvisation skills are introduced.
