Instrumental Lessons at Hillview

A range of instrumental lessons are on offer through private tutors at Hillview.  Parents and students enter into their own arrangements with the tutors regarding payment and lesson times.  Lessons mostly take place in class time, so it is important for parents to negotiate a suitable time for withdrawal from class with their child's homeroom teacher.

Drum Tuition--Cameron Finlay (Bachelor of Music Arts with majors in jazz drum performance and jazz composition/arranging)
 

Cameron is a professional performer and session musician, with teaching experience since 2018. Cam holds a Bachelor's degree in jazz performance and composition from Ara, and is active in the NZ music scene in a variety of styles from jazz, funk, hip hop and pop. 

Lessons are focused on building great foundations in coordination, technique, timing/feel, and musicality. Cam's methodology is drawn from studying the great innovators of contemporary drumming, alongside notes from a selection of renowned method books and customised to each student's progress and ability. 

 

*please note that these lessons are available for students year 5 and above*

/Music Theory Tuition – Michael Stoop


Michael is a classical guitarist, composer, and teacher. He offers guitar and music theory lessons to students of all ages, levels, and styles.

Michael studied classical guitar performance at the New Zealand School of Music
with Matthew Marshall and Dr Jane Curry, and completed his Bachelor of Music in
2012. Since graduating, Michael has run a private teaching studio in Wellington. He has also worked as an itinerant teacher, and as a guitar tutor at the NZSM.

Michael is active as a performer and a composer, and many of his videos and published compositions can be found online. Michael moved back to his hometown of Christchurch in 2023, and continues to operate his Wellington studio online.

Michael prepares students for Trinity practical exams and ABRSM theory exams.

He also enjoys teaching a wide range of musical styles to students of all ages.

Individual lessons are $35 for half an hour.

Yvonne has been teaching at Hillview for several years. She enjoys teaching a wide range of ages. 

Classical to modern styles are taught. 

The opportunity to sit piano and theory exams is also offered.  

Lessons are given before and during class time.  Lunchtime lessons are also available if needed.

Individual lessons are $35.00 per half an hour.

Piano/Keyboard/Jazz Piano/Theory Tuition #2

Teacher:  Emma Parkes (ATCL, B.TchLn)

Emma is a trained primary teacher and has run music programmes in schools for Years 1-9 students here in New Zealand and in London.

She is currently in her third year of a jazz degree.  Emma has also taken students for classical piano lessons in the past and has seen students through to grade 6 level (and is happy to teach beyond this grade as well).

 

She brings a wide variety of music-teaching and performing experience to her teaching practice. Emma has also been on the worship team for Hillsong London and enjoys teaching students how to play church style music as well.  She also enjoys giving keyboard lessons, enabling students to use the different functions of a keyboard in creating desired effects.

No matter the style, Emma has a strong emphasis on skills, such as scales and arpeggios, that will enable students to understand what they are playing and to establish building blocks for improvisation.

Violin Tuition--Cornelia Didenco
Diploma of Moldovian State Conservatorium
Violin

Cornelia was born in Moldova, one of the ex-Soviet Union republics. She graduated from the Moldavian State Conservatorium with a Diploma in Speciality String Instruments, which  qualifies her as a violinist, soloist interpreter/ symphonic orchestra artist/ chamber ensemble artist, and music teacher. 

​

Cornelia plays the violin in the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. She is also a solo and chamber group performer and leader of the Resonance Ensemble.

 

Cornelia has more than 30 years’ teaching experience. She has played in symphony orchestras, both in Moldova and New Zealand, for 27 years.

 

During her time in the Moldavian Symphony Orchestra, Cornelia performed in La Scala, Sala Verdi in Milano. She has also, performed on other, prestigious stages in Italy, Spain. Germany, Switzerland, and Romania.

 

While in NZ, Cornelia has toured with the CSO to Japan. She has also performed in the CSO on the same stage as celebrities including Dianna Krall, Cliff Richard, George Benson, Serj Tankian, and Andrea Bocelli.

 

 

Cornelia currently teaches violin, viola, and music theory at CSM, SDMS, St.Martins, Opawa, and Hillview Christian School.

 

Cornelia came to New Zealand, 20 years ago. She is married and has three children. Two cats and two cockatiels are also part of the household. Cornelia enjoys family activities, gardening, and cooking.

The Christchurch School of Music runs a wonderful band programme that Hillview students can opt into.  Weekly lessons in trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, saxophone, and percussion are on offer.  As part of the programme students also receive an hour of band tuition per week.  We do not offer our own itinerant teachers in these instruments, but encourage students to engage in the band programme.  Band enrollment happens at the end of the year for the following one.  The programme starts in February every year.  For more information, please click on
